Dilenia started writing the F@#$ Boys movie Project while still in film school, – that’s where she first observed the growing phenomenon of the “F@#$ Boy”. But the path to making an independent feature film wasn’t easy.
Watch as she describes the F@#$ Boys movie project trajectory and how F234 came to be.
Taking on the production of an independent movie like the F@#$ Boys Movie requires courage. The courage to talk about the uncomfortable relationship dynamic between men and women today.
When the rules of engagement sold to women – those of romance and some confusing sense of equality, don’t quite line up with the treatment experienced when they actually start dating. But the F@#$ Boys movie isn’t about dating, it is about a girl named Ella, coming of age and meeting F@#$ Boys left and right. The damage that can cause and all the forms the F@#$ Boys behavior can take on.
We call it an anti-romance because there’s no fuzz about the approach. There’s no confusion once the nonsense comes to light. What is it with adult men chasing after teenage girls?
These are the F-BOY stats, funny at first but dead serious in the end. This film talks about the intersectionality of identity of a black latina. About the ways in which F-Boy behavior is perpetuated and un-corrected. What happens when boys aren’t taught to see the women in their lives as people?
In this video, Dilenia shares about her background as an immigrant artist. In her process she observes what’s present in the world and translates into art, she does this with film the same as painting or drawing. In her college years she documented on the experiences of young people in college and from there drew inspiration to write the script for the movie.
In leading this project she attempts to reshape the culture behind film production, forming a production company in the process: F234. She engages with each member of the project, one on one, respecting the collaboration in every step. From the audition the their fundraising efforts, this production aims to represent the underrepresented authentically.
To make the F@#$ Boys movie project happen we had to shake off some of the standards of set-life. As a Director Dilenia is not afraid of jumping in on sound, lights or camera, if it means helping and collaborating with the rest of the crew and moving efficiently.
In some complicated scenes we ran into problems and had to reshoot, this scene was one of them. We figured it out in the end.
The parties in the film are practically real.
